Twitter Etiquette for your Coffee Fundraiser.

Like most things in life, there is an etiquette shared among the general population regarding Twitter and it’s tweets. Some might say there is no twitter etiquette at all. Those same people probably eat with their elbows on the table, chew with their mouth open, and don’t open doors for ladies. Whether right or wrong, this list has been comprised for our partners to note some of the Do’s and Don’ts of Twitter as you share your Coffee Fundraiser Site and promote your coffee with a cause.

Feel free on comment on other unmentioned faux pas.

(“Because they have a big following” isn’t a good reason to use their handle)

Leave room for others.

Etiquette, not the Law.

As you will probably notice, @phoenixc_coffee isn’t perfect, nor do we always abide by the rules. However, having a few guidelines as you tweet can help make you more polite and professional.

Living Proof.

The photo above came through today from @WellspringLivin. Though the tweet was generated through their blog, you can see how they directed their message to coffee drinker, used hashtags to denote a focus, linked to their Coffee Fundraiser Site, and taged us (which we gratefully retweeted).

Twitter Etiquette, #FAIL.

Sometimes, the best way to learn is make mistakes. Note the repetition in our own promotional tweets…FAIL.

Another great coffee with a cause.

This week, two of our team (Brian Holland and Morgan Lopes) traveled to JavaVino, a coffee shop just outside the city. The visit was sparked by a customer who was seeking samples of organic coffee and, having met Heddy and Steve earlier this year, the story of their beans brought them to the top of the list. Though a state-side shop and roasting facility, JavaVino is connected to Selva Negra, a breathtaking coffee plantation in Nicaragua.

The Backstory.

Nearly a year ago, our team was able to visit Selva Negra. This plantation takes sustainability to a whole new level. From temporary and permanent housing for workers, to the on-site school and medical clinic, then the fields of fruit trees, the cheese culturing hut, the composting station and livestock, the wet milling station, and vast acres of coffee trees, the entire property is without equal. For Selva Negra, which is spanish for “Black Forest”, sustainability is not a marketing ploy or “buzz word”, it is a way of life. And quite frankly, they set the bar VERY high.

Now, let’s roast.

Fortunately for us, and our client, we were able to purchase some of this organic, Rainforest Certified green coffee for roasting.

How does it taste?

Well, you’ll have to stop by and taste some for yourself.

We are really excited about the 41,800lbs of coffee that has arrived from Honduras. Through our partnership with Abundant Life Coffee Group, we now have the potential to generate over $160,000 in economic relief. ALCG has been working with the Lanca people group in Honduras to help them plant their own farms and create a sustainable revenue source for their families.

Greg Hines, the founder of ALCG, shared that the most exciting cooperative they are forming involves 16 single mothers, modern day widows and orphans. A modern day widow and orphan refers to women and children whose husbands and fathers have abandoned the family and refuse to provide care and support. What a beautiful picture of redemption, that by being educated about how to grow their own coffee these mothers can now provide for themselves and be released from the bondage of plantation owners.

Now, Phoenix Community Coffee will be able to purchase green coffee from single mothers, roast the coffee as a means of supporting single mothers in their community, and sell that same coffee to generate sustainable income for organizations like StreetGRACE who are fighting to end exploitation and injustice.

Look closely at the photograph below. You may only see a pile of coffee, but we see relief, love, and hope.

The goal of Phoenix Community Coffee is to create economic relief through the sale of quality, mission directed coffee. It’s purchased from relief focused farms, roasted to generate local community support, and sold to allow partners to empower their community to direct their consumer resources into the areas of life they are passionate about. That may seem like a mouth full but it simplifies into three easy points, “the green bean”, “the roasted bean”, and “the brewed bean”.

The green bean refers to the network of international farms and cooperatives that receives direct payment for their product. This allows them to receive increased profit through eliminating middlemen and “certifying agencies” that penalize the farmers. By receiving an ethical wage for their product, sometimes 400% MORE than “fair trade”, the farmers are then able to pay their workers and migrant pickers a sustainable income. A great example is the work of Abundant Life Coffee Group.

The roasted bean involves the mission of Phoenix Community Coffee. As a coffee roaster and wholesale organization, coffee is private labeled, packaged and sold to finance the infrastructure costs of loving and serving their community. Some of these community initiatives, performed in conjunction with the Phoenix Community of Atlanta, include providing support for Wellspring Living, feeding shelter guests at the Atlanta Mission, community support for Open Heavens Atlanta, and many more.

The brewed bean is shared with community partnerships. These partnerships include businesses, nonprofits, civic organizations, churches, and individuals seeking to make an impact in their community. Partners like the Andrew P. Stewart Center, B. B. Harris Elementary, Sugar Hill Church, StreetGRACE, Water is Basic, Riza Ministry, and Grace Fellowship Snellville are making a difference in their community and around the world through the sale of coffee.
